Serato's Prepare panel: the request tool you're underusing

Most DJs treat Serato's Prepare panel as a staging area they forget about halfway through the night. It's actually the cleanest place to hold what the room is asking for — if you use it with a little discipline.

Prepare = tonight's intentions

Everything you drag into Prepare is a small promise to yourself: "I want to get to this." At a wedding it's usually the couple's requests; in a club it's the tracks you're itching to drop. Because it's per-night and clears out, it's the most honest snapshot of what this specific gig needs.

The problem: a request is only good if it fits

Here's where it goes wrong. You load fifteen requests into Prepare, and mid-set you're staring at a list where only two of them work right now — the rest are the wrong key, wrong tempo, wrong energy for the record playing. Scrolling that list under pressure is exactly the moment you don't want.

Let the fitting one rise

The trick is to stop thinking of Prepare as a to-do list and start thinking of it as a pool to be filtered. The right request isn't "the next one on the list" — it's the one that's harmonically and tempo-compatible with what's on the deck this second. A requested track in the current key can be worth surfacing even if you've barely played it, precisely because someone asked. Loaded thoughtfully and filtered to fit, Prepare stops being a chore and becomes the fastest way to say yes to the floor.
